Expectations
12:29 AM - February 28th, 2005
Now that Qsk has officially closed Seasons all of his loyal readers are now flocking here. So, to them, I say welcome! From the comments you’ve left on Qsk’s posts, I feel like I’ve got big expectations that I need to live up to. Now, I know that I may not be as talented as Qsk, or as funny as him, and I’m definitely not as physically attractive as him (give us a turn around, will ya?), but hopefully in time you will learn to accept me for who I am. So welcome! Whoever you all are ;)

Dear Alexander,
I’m glad to make your acquaintance, weblogwise. ::chuckle:
Here’s the thing about expectations, though: I’m not sure whether to have very high expectations of your side of the equation, or none at all.
For the former, it makes sense because (and I speak here as Quad’s long-ago instructor) I’ve known Quad for many years now–what Quad… 7? 8?–and I’ve followed his weblog and web design work for that long, and been deeply impressed with his technical skill and web aesthetic. And I’ve always loved and respected his high level of writing skill.. AND his commitment to this medium (I’ve had some students more talented as writers than Quad, but who never really took to weblogging). As such, any new effort by him — such as this your dual-weblog now — carries with it the weight and burden of exceedingly high expectations.
On the other hand, I don’t know you from Adam, so… any expectations are unreasonable. ::chuckle::
Not to put any pressure on you, but as you surely know, that guy on the other side of the aisle has some pretty big shoes to fill… and you now have to fill one of them, in a way. Whether you like it or not, that job will come with a certain degree of expectation from longtime readers of Quadoshock/Seasons.
And yet again, on the other hand, you really ought to be a tabula rasa, and you’re free to be who you are and however you want to be, in that/this space.
Sincerely,
Lloyd.

I disagree with Lloyd on a lot of points he mentioned. Not cause they’re wrong, but cause my view of weblogging is a bit different. Both of you should feel free to write whatever you like and be whoever you want and ignore people’s “expectations”. And I don’t think you’ll have any trouble there, since you had a Xanga and all. Just be yourself, blah blah blah… :)
I’ve seen dual weblogs before (done like this, too, not just the ones Lloyd mentioned), but this is the first time I’ve had cause to read one. And I have to say I’m looking forward to learning more about you, cause unlike Lloyd, I actually recognize who you are from Q’s logs. :P
That said… thanks for the welcome… and in return, welcome to our community too. Cause whether he knew it or not, Quad just dragged you into one. :)

(psst… he had a Blogger, not a Xanga. Years ago, he had an ETP, but that only lasted a few days)

Frickin’… I knew it was a Blogger. :( I don’t know why I said Xanga, damn me.

“I’m definitely not as physically attractive as him”
Ya, no matter how hard you try, he always seems to get more guys than you.

And I really try hard! It’s not fair!

Lloyd is kind of making me mad, so i’m going to rant a bit.. As one of the few readers on this site that knows xero better than q, i’m a little offended at your tone or writing; its very condescending. Both q and xero have equal rights to this page, its duality, not q’s page and that guy who posts on the other side. :P this is a weblog, not a webcomic or some other kind of site meant for your entertainment. this is a space where two people post thoughts, opinions, and reviews and it will generally reflect their lives. xero can and should post whatever he wants, whenever he damn well pleases. when he’s busy, he won’t post, and when he isn’t he will. i’ve read some of your other comments on the site and while constructive criticism is well and good, i think you’re going a bit far. I’m truly sorry if i offended anybody, but i thought i should say something in lex’s defense.
P.S. i’m still waiting for lex and emmy in search of pirates! :P

Emmy (and Lex),
I apologize if I came across as condescending or insulting. I certainly didn’t mean to be so!
Those who know me can certainly attest to the fact that my weblog communication style (as in my letter above) is chatty, informally analytical, verbose, and above all frank. None of which is meant to give offense.
I’m simply excited to see this new aspect of Quad’s weblogging life, and was initially puzzled but also intrigued that he chose to go in this duo-weblogging direction. I wrote about this on my weblog entry yesterday, Q pushing the envelope. again. That it’s Quad-centric makes sense because I only have known of the Quad side of Duality. That I have weblogging expectations of anyone who associates himself with someone I’ve known for a while now, is also reasonable. (Which suggests I’m interested in Alexis, and do care about his persona and nature; I’m not at all attacking him, and am sorry if my note came across as such.)
I’m still a bit unclear on the notion of this format, though, if either writer weblogs mostly independently of the other. Doesn’t it make sense to think that there will be a kind of ongoing conversation between both halves? IMHO, it would be more interesting that way.
Lloyd.
p.s.: It’s terrific that Q/X have opened up their weblog to public commentary, too. It’s the sort of thing that better generates interest and cross-aisle banter, obviously. (Like now!) Hopefully WP has strong built-in anti-comment-spam barriers.
