Looking Ahead

Just a heads up: once I have free time again, I’ll be redesigning this place. The big change might be switching from a side-by-side post format to a one-post-after-another format. Or not. Switching would give “above the fold” room to recent post / comment listings and links to the latest reviews. Not switching maintains the balance—visually and structurally (can’t quite put it into words at the moment).

*as long as the comments are not about adding recent comments listings (it’ll be there) or adding avatars of some sort (those’ll be there). =)

if you’re wondering whether or not to do it, how about just do the design and let the user choose between 2 versions?
i’m also interested in seeing a fresh look. that would give space for other interesting things “below the fold” — like recent reviews, etc.
btw, avatars sound like a good idea. :D

I like the idea of the latest entry from either one being at the top. When someone doesn’t post for a while, that side or half of the page is exceedingly static, and seeing the same thing time after time when visiting the site gets tedious. Such that after a while, it’s easy to ignore it entirely (and then by mistake, when in fact a new post gets written).

emmy likes the idea of avatars, but i can never use them cause they ask for a url, emmy has no website… just cool pictures on my hardrive…

Just a thought, but it would be nice if there was a “recent reviews” side bar or something like that. I don’t like the fact that I spend all this time to write a great review, and then if I post anything else afterwards, its logged in the history never to be seen again. Makes me kinda sad :(

hey Xero, what’s your opinion on the change from side-by-side to single column (for posts)? Can’t really do sidebars without changing that aspect of the design.

If I can see some sort of example of what you’re thinking of, I’ll let you know then. Oh, and we should talk about pictures, or at least the ability for me to alter the folders, etc. Otherwise I’ve gotta keep waiting for you everytime I want a picture with a post.

Back in the days, you had to walk fifteeen miles in the snow to get an avatar, and they only allowed a 2×1 pixel spot for it. Some people made it blue. It was neato.

Avatar with single-column posts would be a nice change. I really like the current layout, though.
