ZBrush

7:35 PM - November 20th, 2005

These movies of ZBrush made my jaw drop.

Now, I’m no expert on 3D-modeling software. I stopped following the field after the mega-merger of Specular, Fractal Design, and MetaTools into MetaCreations and the subsequent firesale when MetaCreations turned into the irrelevant MetaStream (now Viewpoint). But you don’t need to be an expert to see that ZBrush has an incredibly-slick and -intuitive interface.

Just from watching the movies, I already feel like I understand how to use the program. It’s almost like sculpting clay with your bare hands—almost because when using ZBrush, you don’t have to worry about making both sides look the same!

If I had more free time, ZBrush would definitely be a program I’d check out. Doesn’t look like that’ll happen any time soon though. Time to cook! Posted!

    Holy god.

it is freakin amazing, however it looks like something that is only easy when you watch a pro do it, when i’d actually try it i wouldn’t know what to do. it’d take me a day and a half rather than 15 mins to make that fish even with somebody to guide me.

but then that’s true for me for any graphics things. it should be a lot better for you graphics people. =)

    Extraordinary.

Don’t think it’d be that easy for even computer adepts to sculpt something like that anglerfish, though. I think it requires either (a) a great deal of imagination, or (b) more importantly, a solid grasp of the anatomy of the animal being modeled.

You’d definitely need a model or picture to look at. It’s like that guy that paints landscapes on TV. He’s not just pulling everything out of his posterior. He has some reference or sketch offscreen that he follows.

ZBrush won’t automatically make any computer-savvy user into a great artist. What it does it remove the complexity that stands between concept and finished product.
